CHAGALL - an exhibition celebrating the story of an international master, among the greatest artists of the twentieth century, Marc Chagall (1887-1985). For a change we decided on a Sunday afternoon (29 October) to visit the CHAGALL exhibition at the Jewish Museum of Australia in Alma Road, St Kilda. This obviously appealed as we had well over 40 bookings.
There is no other way to report on this event than by expressing immense gratitude.
So, MILLE MERCIS Natacha Muller, director of The French Loop for guiding us
during a whole day and showing us ways to create “des occasions théâtrales” in our classes.
An apt sub-title for l’Atelier théâtre would be FAIRE FEU DE TOUT BOIS, the name of one of the workshops proposed.
The 8 participating French teachers left invigorated and indeed ready to faire feu de tout bois, as we all realised how
natural it is to integrate drama to language teaching and learning.
On Friday 11 August, Sacré Coeur in Glen Iris hosted the annual AFTV Soirée Trivia night. The evening was attended by 11 schools with 76 students from Years 9 and 10 and their teachers.
25 participants attended this tech session dedicated to the 'how to' of online learning apps and websites. Over the course of the day, teachers used their new skills to create an Answer Garden, a Mentimeter (how to create surveys, ranking questions, and provide pictures as prompts for medium length writing tasks). Jaclyn Curnow also introduced Baamboozle and demonstrated how to set up this easy-to-use game as a partner or group work activity.
A big thank you to Vincent Berraud who hosted this meeting at Caulfield Junior College on Tuesday 1 August.
Vincent showed us some of his opening routines and shared with us how he incorporates songs into his lessons to teach vocabulary such as
family and professions. We then tackled the huge topic of assessment; comparing progression points, record keeping and how to interpret
ACARA (and the soon to be released VCAA).
On Sunday 23 July, 47 members and guests gathered at the National Gallery of Victoria to attend 2023’s MELBOURNE WINTER MASTERPIECES EXHIBITION featuring more than 100 works by Pierre Bonnard (1867-1947), celebrated for his iridescent palette depicting intimate domestic interiors, natural landscapes and urban scenes.
Forum de la Francophonie Melbourne and the AFTV have been collaborating for 3 years to offer students studying French from Years 5 to 8 an opportunity to discover the Francophone world by creating a video on a French speaking country.
The AFTV Language Immersion Weekend was a huge success, enjoyed by all participants who agreed unanimously it is a wonderful way to spend a weekend attending workshops on a variety of French teaching topics, sharing ideas, speaking only French all weekend, at the beautiful Bellinzona Guest House in Hepburn Springs.
AN AFTV / BASTILLE DAY FRENCH FESTIVAL INITIATIVE
The Bastille Day Video Competition was very popular again this year. Students from years 5 to 8 were asked to create a promotional video on
how Bastille Day is celebrated in a French city/town of their choice.
The Primary Network attendees had a great night sharing their resources with like minded educators! What a hard-working and talented group it is!
Compte rendu
After a chilly start to the morning of Sunday 30 April, 40 of us (well really, 39 plus 1 dog) gathered outside Door 17 at The Lume Melbourne
to meet Monet and Friends and experience their adventure into French Impressionism, featuring works by Manet, Monet, Renoir, Degas, Morisot,
Cassatt, Sisley, Signac, Cézanne, Caillebotte, Lautrec… sights, sounds, tastes and aromas combining to offer a unique chance to enter into
their world and to see art in a new light, where light was such an integral component of their works.
An AFTV / Forum de la Francophonie Initiative
Compte Rendu
AFTV and Forum de la Francophonie launched the 1st Book Club for French Teachers in Victoria during Francophonie Week. We loved
collaborating with [Charlotte Mackay] to launch our Club Littéraire pour les enseignants.
Compte Rendu
Hook, Lines & Sync-er was a great opportunity for Primary and Middle years teachers to get together and re-think some of the ways in
which French is delivered and ‘received’ in Victorian schools.

Our presenters, Nathalie Marchand and Lucie Dickens welcomed 42 attendees to our PL Nailing it on Units 1 and 3 French on Friday 17 February
at the Catholic Leadership Centre.
Thank you to all for the professional collaboration and rich discussion around how to design units of work to meet the expected outcomes,
how to design SACs and for sharing ideas.
Stay tuned for details on a similar PL on unit 2 and 4 mid year !
COMPTE RENDU
The 40th Anniversary and AGM of the AFTV was celebrated at the Catholic Learning Centre on Friday 10 February 2023. Being a
special occasion, both Past Presidents and Life Members of the AFTV were invited to attend as well as AFTV members of schools in all 3
sectors. It was a very well attended and happy meeting where participants had plenty of opportunities to catch up with colleagues, some of
whom they hadn’t seen for a long time.
Congratulations to everyone involved in making the AFTV/FATFA 2022 Conference, such a great success!!
Attendance numbers exceeded expectations, food was superb and plentiful, plenary and session presenters thought-provoking, wellness sessions
unique, relaxing and a lot of fun, brilliant venue, very interesting exhibitor stands!
Compte Rendu
During the September school holidays, from Saturday 17 September to Monday 26 September, twelve dedicated French teachers spent
ten days discovering the rich and diverse culture of New Caledonia. The Study Tour was a huge success, helped by the endless sunshine
throughout the trip.
